For a young puppy, everything is an experience being filed away in their brain under "safe" or "scary." For an older dog coming to a salon for the first time, the same applies — it's unfamiliar territory, and their reaction to it will colour every visit that follows.

This is why we never rush a first groom. The goal isn't just a clean dog at the end — it's a dog that leaves feeling calm and confident.

What Happens at a First Groom with Botanical Bark

The Welcome

When you arrive, we take time to let your dog explore and settle before anything else happens. There's no rushing them onto a table the moment they walk through the door. Ella introduces herself gently, lets your dog sniff and get comfortable, and reads how they're feeling before the groom begins.

We'll ask you a few questions too — how your dog is at home with handling, whether they've had any previous grooming experiences, and whether there are any areas they're particularly sensitive about.

The Bath

We use natural, gentle products throughout — no harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances that can overwhelm a dog's sensitive nose. The bath is kept calm and relaxed, with water temperature carefully checked and calm handling throughout.

For dogs that are anxious, we take it slower and use even gentler products to minimise any sensory stress.

Drying and Brushing

We use low-noise, dog-appropriate drying methods. Loud, powerful dryers pointed directly at an anxious dog are one of the most common causes of grooming stress — we're aware of this and approach drying carefully, especially for first-timers.

The Groom

Depending on coat type and breed, we'll then move into the clip or tidy — again, always reading how the dog is doing and adjusting our pace accordingly. If a dog is struggling with a particular part of the process, we stop, reassure, and try a different approach rather than pushing through.

Nails, Ears, and Finishing

Nail trimming and ear cleaning are included as part of the full groom. For dogs that are particularly sensitive about their paws, we'll go gently and may do nails over two visits if needed.

Our Puppy Introduction Groom

For very young puppies, we offer a dedicated puppy introduction groom. This shorter appointment is specifically designed to introduce puppies to the grooming environment at their own pace — a bath, blow-dry, light brush, and handling of ears and paws — without the full groom on top.

Touch ears, mouth, and face — again, just gentle, calm contact helps dogs get used to being handled in those areas.

Brush regularly — even short sessions with a soft brush before the first groom help your dog associate brushing with calm, positive experiences.
