Why We Only Use Natural Products at Botanical Bark

When you drop your dog off for a groom, the last thing you want to worry about is what’s being put on their skin and coat. At Botanical Bark in Hemel Hempstead, we made the decision early on to use only natural, gentle products — and it’s a decision we stand behind completely.

Dogs Have Sensitive Skin — And Most People Don’t Realise It

A dog’s skin is thinner and more pH-sensitive than human skin, which means harsh detergents, artificial fragrances, and chemical preservatives can cause real problems. Even products marketed as “pet-safe” can contain ingredients that strip the natural oils from a dog’s coat, leaving their skin dry, itchy, or irritated.

We see the difference regularly. Dogs who come in with flaky skin, dull coats, or persistent scratching often respond really well once they’re being groomed with gentler, more natural alternatives.

What “Natural” Means to Us

We’re not talking about vague marketing language. When we say natural, we mean products with plant-based cleansing agents, no synthetic fragrances, no parabens, no sulphates, and no artificial colourants. We look carefully at ingredient lists and only use products we’d be comfortable recommending to owners of dogs with allergies or sensitive skin.

We choose our shampoos, conditioners, and finishing sprays based on what’s actually in them — not just what’s on the front of the bottle.

Particularly Good for Dogs With Skin Conditions

If your dog has a diagnosed skin condition — such as atopic dermatitis, seborrhoea, or environmental allergies — the products used during grooming can either help or make things worse.

We work with a lot of dogs in Hemel Hempstead and the surrounding area who have ongoing skin sensitivities, and their owners regularly tell us they notice less scratching and better coat condition after visits with us. We can’t replace veterinary treatment, but we can make sure the groom itself isn’t adding to the problem.

Better for Your Dog, Better for Everyone

Natural products tend to be kinder to the environment as well. We care about how we run this business from start to finish — and that includes not washing synthetic chemicals down the drain after every appointment.

If you’ve been looking for a dog grooming spa in Hemel Hempstead that takes what goes on your dog as seriously as you do, that’s exactly what we’re here for.
